The science: Your vagus nerve is the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system—your “rest and restore” system. It runs from your brainstem all the way through your chest and abdomen. - Cold water exposure: Splash cold water on your face or hold an ice cube in your mouth for 10-20 seconds. This triggers the dive reflex, instantly activating vagal tone.
- Extended exhale: Breathe in for 4 counts, out for 6 or 8. A longer exhale activates parasympathetic dominance through the vagus nerve.
- Slow neck turns: Slowly turn your head side to side, pausing at each turn. This stretches the vagus nerve and releases tension.
